Last Week's Lecture for General Dentists

I like to help out any way I can in the area of continuing education. We were pleased to have Larry Calton, from Calton Lab in Gainesville, here last week. He conducted a lecture for our local general dentists. The lecture was held here at my office. Our turnout was so fantastic that we will be having another one! I think everyone that attended gained some extremely useful knowledge and understanding from the lab standpoint.

Our first Teeth-In-An-Hour patient returned today for his regular check up. His procedure was completed four years ago. He said today that it was the best investment that he ever made. Bob is 81 years old, still works as a flight instructor, and is doing better than ever!

Weekly Update

This week has been busy! We were thrilled to have had the pleasure of company in the office. A senior periodontal resident from the University of Florida visited and observed our office this week.

Our implant seminar was held on Tuesday. We had a great turn-out and hope to see many more new faces for the next seminar, which will be on February 4th.

I am excited to announce that we will have another addition to the office! My lead surgical assistant, Nicole, is expecting the delivery of her 2nd child, a daughter, in early March. Stay tuned for her name.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope this message finds you well and that you had a great holiday! I thought I’d update you with some things that have been going on in and out of the office.

We started our vacation with our annual staff holiday party which was held at Eleanor’s and my home. We all had dinner together, shared lots of laughs, and I made Bananas Foster for everyone! I spend so much time with my staff throughout the day and it is really nice to get to spend some time with their families as well.

I am proud to announce that our son, Matthew, got married on December 28th. We are so happy to have Jenifer added to our family!

I am conducting a Dental Implant seminar which is free to anyone who would like to attend. All we ask is that you bring a can of food to donate to our local food banks. We hold one every three weeks and this month’s seminar will be on Tuesday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. The goal from the seminar is to help the attendees understand what dental implants are, what to expect from the procedure, and gives an opportunity for attendees to get any questions answered. I hope that if you have not attended a seminar and are interested in implants, I will see you there!

Best Wishes for an Excellent 2009!

Sincerely,

Lee N. Sheldon, D.M.D.

What's in an exam?

One of the services that I am most proud of is our examination. I know. There's glamour in treatment. Surgery has such an important connotation. Implants are great. Cosmetic surgery is such a big deal. Well, without the examination without the proper sequence of treatment, all the fancy surgery in the world may not help.

The fact is that good treatment begins with a good treatment plan. A good treatment plan is more likely to result in lasting treatment. It results in completed treatment. It results in fewer "redos." It gives you the confidence that the work is going to be completed and completed well.

I cannot tell you the world of difference there is between a well thought out treatment plan, and one that is not well thought out. Remember the project that you were a part of? Do you remember the project that was well done? Do you remember the project that was not? What was the difference between the two? I'll bet that the well done project was well thought out before it was even started.

Now we've taken the exam and treatment plan and moved it one step further. Donate $50 or more to one of our selected charities and you get the exam and x-rays at no charge. The exam and x-rays is ordinarily $200. Whether you need our services or not, this offer applies to you. You will leave knowing what dental work you should have done. And you'll have a written plan that you can take to any dentist along with the x-rays. So far, we've collected over $50,000 for charity in this way. So benefit yourself while you benefit these charities. Please give us a call at 259-9980 and make an appontment for a full examination. Get the treatment plan that you need before you start treatment.

What is periodontal disease?

Gum disease, or more correctly called "periodontal disease", is a bacterial infection in the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It can be divided into several categories. The first stage is called "gingivitis" and is characterized by gum tissue that is red, puffy, and bleeds easily when touched with a toothbrush, floss or dental instrument.

The second, third, and fourth stages are initial, moderate, and advanced "periodontal disease", respectively. These stages are different from gingivitis because the infection has destroyed the bone supporting the teeth, causing eventual tooth loss. The treatment is more involved at these stages, usually consisting of a special cleaning with anesthesia and sometimes gum surgery. Periodontal disease can go on for years without pain and without detection unless specific examination procedures are performed. Visual oral examination by itself (even by a dentist) will not reliably detect periodontal disease until it has reached an advanced stage.

Early detection and adequate diagnosis require measurement of pockets (the crevice between the tooth and gum) with a periodontal probe. The earlier you catch the disease, the better the prognosis with treatment. However, advances in periodontal treatment are such that we can sometimes help you regrow lost bone support. Dental implants are very predictable as well, and should always be considered as an option in advanced cases. If you have concerns about periodontal disease, please contact our office and we will help you make the best decision, so that your treatment is as predictable and long-lasting as possible.
